Bio for Kathy Miller, TFN president

After first serving as the Texas Freedom Network’s deputy director from 1996 to 2000, Kathy Miller returned to TFN as president in January 2005. During her time at TFN, Kathy has helped the organization become a respected and influential champion of religious freedom, civil liberties and strong public schools. In addition, phenomenal growth in TFN’s membership, staff and budget since 2005 has reinforced the organization’s status as the nation’s preeminent state-based counter voice to far-right political extremism.

Kathy has also served as communications director for the Texas Council on Family Violence and National Domestic Violence Hotline and as public affairs director for Planned Parenthood Federation of Austin.

As spokesperson for TFN and other organizations, Kathy has testified before the Texas Legislature and the U.S. Congress and has appeared on cable news networks such as CNN, MSNBC and FOX and the major broadcast networks. She has also given numerous interviews on local, state and national radio and has appeared in newspapers such as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post.

In 2012, Kathy was featured prominently in “The Revisionaries,” an award-winning documentary film on the culture wars at the Texas State Board of Education.

Additionally, Kathy has trained thousands of individuals across the nation on media relations, grassroots organizing and mobilizing to combat far-right extremism.

Kathy earned a degree in political science from the University of Texas at Austin in 1991 and attended the University of Texas graduate school, studying philosophy. She is the mother of two daughters, Caroline, who attends public school in Austin, and Olivia, who graduated from Austin public schools and is now a student at Louisiana State University.
