Defending Civil Liberites
Same-sex Marriage
The Texas Freedom Network affirms the dignity of all families and supports legislation that truly helps them. Unnecessary and divisive efforts to “define” marriage in the Texas Constitution divert attention from issues critical to working families and schoolchildren.
The Legislature in 2005 passed a proposed amendment to the state Constitution banning same-sex marriage and even civil unions. That fall voters approved that amendment.
Efforts to pass an amendment to the U.S. Constitution banning same-sex marriage have so far failed. Many states, however, have enacted their own constitutional amendments. Some states bar recognition of just same-sex marriage. Other states (such as Texas) bar legal recognition of any kind, such as civil unions, for same-sex couples.
